As Befits the Gods

by Anthony Perdue

I, a desert god forsaken

Have ended my reign with due bereavement

Truly did I foresee their defection from sustained belief

In me

We, the gods who are

Embrace our experiences with the process of birth

As each culture reviving us

Adapts to its predecessors conduct of worship

Bejeweled in native splendor was my image adorned

Then comes the day when the ritual commences

Preparing my departure

Leaving the land, I engage in conference with my successor

Acknowledging our consented participation

As befits the gods,

We choose the times of our rediscovery
